We are happy to report that Canadians are continuing to call on the Canadian government to put forward legislation clearly establishing Indigenous Peoples's status as Founding Nations of Canada. Our people, our cultures, our civilizations were all here for thousands of years before European settlers came. We had democratic systems of government, sustainable land, water, and fisheries management, and protected women and children from violence and neglect.
Then the Europeans came. They knew nothing of these things. They had no democratic values, no understanding of sustainable resource management, and did not value the safety and equality of women and children.
All of Canada now struggles to overcome the legacy of these unsustainable and inequitable practices. In this struggle, First Nations can offer a vision of sustainable, safe, and equitable society.
